CUTTING BOARD CARE AND MAINTENANCE

Caring for a wood cutting board is essential to maintain its longevity and hygiene. Follow these instructions to ensure your wood cutting board remains in excellent condition:

Daily Cleaning:

  1. After each use, wash the cutting board with warm, soapy water. Avoid using harsh detergents that can damage the wood.
  2. Use a sponge or soft-bristled brush to gently scrub the surface and remove any food particles.
  3. Rinse the cutting board thoroughly with clean water and pat it dry with a clean towel.

Sanitizing:

  1. To sanitize the cutting board, especially after cutting raw meat, poultry, or fish, you can use a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water.
  2. Spray or wipe the solution onto the cutting board and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing with water and drying thoroughly.

Avoid Soaking:

Never soak a wood cutting board in water or leave it submerged, as this can cause warping and splitting.  Prolonged exposure to water can also promote the growth of bacteria and mold.

Regular Maintenance:

Periodically (preferably once a month), apply a thin layer of Post Road Woodworks Board Conditioner or a food-grade mineral oil to the cutting board to maintain its moisture and prevent drying.  Allow the oil to absorb into the wood for a few hours before wiping off any excess.  Depending on usage, aim to oil your cutting board every few weeks or as needed.

Removing Stains and Odors:

For stubborn stains or odors, sprinkle coarse salt onto the cutting board and rub it in with a lemon half, using gentle pressure.  Let the salt and lemon mixture sit for a few minutes before wiping clean with a damp cloth and drying thoroughly.

Avoid Heat and Sunlight:

Keep your wood cutting board away from direct sunlight and sources of heat, such as stovetops and ovens, as excessive heat can cause the wood to dry out and crack.

Storage:

Store your wood cutting board in a dry, well-ventilated area when not in use.  Avoid storing it upright or leaning against a wall, as this can cause it to warp over time.

By following these care instructions, you can ensure that your wood cutting board remains in optimal condition for years to come, providing a safe and sanitary surface for all your food preparation needs.

IF YOU BOUGHT A BOARD FROM US, WE HAVE ALREADY PERFORMED THE FOLLOWING STEP.  IF YOU BOUGHT FROM SOMONE ELSE, OR YOU MAKE YOUR OWN BOARD, BE SURE TO SEASON IT PROPERLY.

Initial Seasoning:

Before using your new wood cutting board, season it with food-grade mineral oil or beeswax to prevent cracking and warping.
Apply a generous amount of oil or wax onto the surface of the cutting board, using a clean cloth or paper towel.
Allow the oil or wax to penetrate the wood for several hours, preferably overnight, before wiping off any excess.
